ID: 23282 | Planting Tip: Plant in early spring, or late summer/early fall in temperate climates. Prefers well-drained, sandy soil. Direct sowing is best, but you can start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost and transplant carefully—flax dislikes root disturbance, so pot up early before roots develop. Harvesting Tip: When pods turn brown and dry, cut a handful of stems at the base and bundle to hang in a well-ventilated spot until fully dry. Crush pods in a pillowcase with a rolling pin, then pour seeds and chaff into a bowl and winnow with wind or a fan. Storage Tip: Store harvested seeds in airtight containers in a cool, dry, dark place. Flax seed oil goes rancid quickly; refrigerate ground flax. |
