Fedco Seeds. OP. Native origin. Though widely grown in Maine 80 years ago, it almost became extinct. LeRoy Souther, of Maine, maintained it over 30 years and brought seeds to John Navaziolate 1980s, who reintroduced it to commerce through Garden City Seeds. After ripening in storage, 3–5 lb fruit turns bright orange, signaling ripeness. Makes incomparable pies. Vines display enormous vigor & astonishing yields. Can keep all winter stored at 50°. Germinates poorly in cold soil. Immature fruit make tasty “summer” squash.

Companion plants: Corn, Pole Beans, Radish, Marigold, Nasturtium, Oregano, Calendula.

Planting tip: Soak seeds 24 hrs and scarify to boost germination. Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost, or direct sow late May–early June once soil is 25°C. For exhibition pumpkins, sow 2–3 seeds per hill spaced 15–20′ apart; thin to 1 plant at 3–4″ tall, and after the first pumpkin sets, remove extra flowers and fruit.
Harvesting tip: Mature fruit have a rich color & rinds are hard to dent with a fingernail. The ground spot also gets riper in color (yellow to cream, gold to orange). Cut 2” stem to avoid stem rot. Must cure in a dry, warm place.
Storage tip: Store at 10-12°C w/ 55-75% humidity & good air circulation.

LeRoy Souther, du Maine, l’a maintenue pendant 30 ans et a apportĂ© des graines Ă  John Navazio Ă  la fin des annĂ©es 1980, qui l’a rĂ©introduite dans le commerce par le biais de Garden City Seeds. Après avoir mĂ»ri en entrepĂ´t, les fruits de 3-5 lb deviennent orange vif, signalant leur maturitĂ©. Fait des tartes incomparables. Les vignes affichent une Ă©norme vigueur et des rendements Ă©tonnants. Peut ĂŞtre conservĂ© tout l’hiver Ă  50°. Germe mal dans un sol froid. Fruits immatures font de savoureuses courges d’Ă©tĂ©.

Ensemencement: Faites tremper les graines pendant 24 heures et scarifiez-les pour favoriser la germination. Commencez Ă  l’intĂ©rieur 3 Ă  4 sem. avant le dernier gel, ou semez directement fin mai-dĂ©but juin lorsque le sol atteint 25 °C. Pour les citrouilles d’exposition, semez 2 Ă  3 graines par butte espacĂ©es de 15 Ă  20 cm ; Ă©claircissez pour ne garder qu’un plant de 7 Ă  10 cm de haut, et après la formation de la première citrouille, retirez les fleurs et les fruits supplĂ©mentaires.
RĂ©colte: Les fruits mĂ»rs ont une couleur riche et une Ă©corce difficile Ă  creuser avec l’ongle. De plus, la couleur de la tache au sol devient plus mĂ»re (jaune Ă  crème, or Ă  orange). Couper 2″ de tige pour Ă©viter la pourriture par la tige. Doit mĂ»rir dans un endroit sec et chaud.
Entreposage: Stocker Ă  10-12°C avec 55-75% d’humiditĂ© et une bonne circulation d’air.
