Ancient heirloom from Nara Prefecture, Japan — classified by the Japanese government as Yamato yasai (traditional vegetable of Yamato), one of approximately 19 certified heritage vegetables of Nara. The prefecture’s Buddhist tradition since 675 CE shaped a vegetarian cuisine where this pepper became a cornerstone. Striking deep-purple pods ripen to red; stems, veins, and flowers all carry purple hues. Sweet, crisp flesh — virtually heatless.

Variété ancienne de la préfecture de Nara, au Japon — classée par le gouvernement japonais comme Yamato yasai (légume traditionnel de Yamato), elle fait partie des quelque 19 légumes patrimoniaux certifiés de Nara. La tradition bouddhiste de la préfecture, remontant à 675, a façonné une cuisine végétarienne dont ce poivron est devenu un élément essentiel. Ses gousses d’un violet profond et éclatant deviennent rouges à maturité ; les tiges, les nervures et les fleurs présentent également des nuances pourpres. Sa chair est douce et croquante, et pratiquement sans piquant.
