Great winter preserver! Grows up to 48 “long and up to 70lbs in weight! When picked when under 30 days old, it is not stringy and is suitable for both baking and canning. At maturity, the fragile, thin skin turns pink-orange.
Archaeologists have discovered evidence of them growing in Peru for ages. In 1893, R. H. Shumway sold the first variety of banana squash in his seed catalogue, introducing it to Americans. It quickly gained popularity and spread to many 19th centuryAmerican gardens.
Companion plants: Corn, Pole beans, Peas, Radish, Sunflower, Parsley, Celery, Buckwheat, Nastertium, Marigold, Oregano. 
Far from: Tomato, Eggplant, Potato, Pepper.
Planting tip: Soak in warm water up to 24H & scarify to improve germination. direct-seed late May, early June, when soil reaches 25°C. Can start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost, move outside once soil reaches 25°C.
Harvesting tip: Mature fruit has a rich color & rinds are hard to dent with a fingernail. The ground spot gets riper in color too (yellow to cream, gold to orange). Cut 2” stem to avoid rot from the stem. Must cure in dry and warm place.
Storage tip: Store at 10-12°C w/ 55-75% humidity & good air flow.

Se conserve exceptionnellement bien en hiver! Peut atteindre jusqu’à 48 “de long et jusqu’à 70lb de poids! Cueillie à moins de 30 jours, elle n’est pas fibreuse et convient aussi bien à la cuisson qu’à la mise en conserve. À maturité, sa peau fragile et fine devient rose-orange.
Les archéologues ont découvert des preuves qu’elles poussaient au Pérou depuis longtemps. En 1893, R. H. Shumway a vendu la première variété de courge banane dans son catalogue de graines, la présentant aux Américains. Elle a rapidement gagné en popularité et s’est répandue dans de nombreux jardins américains du 19ème siècle.
Plantes compagnes: Maïs, haricots grimpants, pois, radis, tournesol, persil, céleri, sarrasin, capucine, souci, origan.
Loin de: Tomate, aubergine, patate, poivron.
Ensemencement: Tremper dans l’eau chaude jusqu’à 24H et scarifier pour mieux germer. Planter directement dehors, fin mai, début juin, quand le sol atteint 25°C. Peut débuter à l’intérieur 3-4 sem. avant le dernier gel. Planter dehors quand le sol atteint 25°C.
Récolte: Les fruits mûrs ont une couleur riche, une écorce difficile à creuser avec l’ongle. La couleur de la tache au sol devient plus mûre aussi (jaune à crème, or à orange). Couper à 2″ de tige pour éviter la pourriture par la tige. Mûrir dans un endroit sec et chaud.
Entreposage: Stocker à 10-12°C, 55-75% d’humidité et une bonne circulation d’air.
