Uncommon herb with a bitter flavour, traditionally grown in herb gardens. Has a long history of use as an abortifacient and to accelerate menstruation. Many species, including dogs, cats, and Japanese beetles, are repelled by its potent odour. As a result, it makes a great companion plant. A stunning cut flower. Draws certain sorts of butterflies. ID: 50568 | Planting Tip: planting outside around mid-spring. Harvesting Tip: Frequently collected for its dried blossoms. Some also manufacture sachets out of rue to use as bug repellent. Pruners usually cut a mature plant at ground level. Hang it to dry in a dark, dry place until leaves turn brittle. Place completely dried rue in an airtight jar until use. Storage Tip: Dry leaves and stems in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place. Store dried herb in airtight containers away from light. Handle w/ gloves as sap can cause skin irritation. |
