Also known as Strawberry Ground Cherry, this whimsical ornamental brings a flash of color to dried and fresh fall flower arrangements alike with its bright orange miniature paper lanterns. It first blooms in tiny white flowers, which develop into toxic ground-cherry type fruits surrounded by husks blushing from green to orange-red. Self-sowing annual spreads rapidly through underground roots. Confining growth is advised.
Planting tip: Seed stratification is required for 3 weeks. Sow seeds indoors for 6-8 weeks before transplanting. Seeds can be sowed directly outside in early spring or late fall.
Harvesting tip: Harvested when in full bloom or when flowers have dried a bit on the stalk. If you crush the flower buds between your fingers and see a red substance (that’s hypericin, the main medicinal constituent), then it is prime for harvesting. To harvest, cut the top 2-3 inches of the plant to get some leaves, flowers, and buds, as they all have some benefits.

Cette plante ornementale saugrenue apporte une étincelle de couleur aux compositions florales d’automne fraîches ou séchées grâce à ses lanternes miniatures en papier orange éclatant. Elle fleurit d’abord en minuscules fleurs blanches, qui se développent en fruits toxiques de type cerise de terre entourés d’enveloppes passant du vert au rouge orangé. Cette plante annuelle se propage rapidement grâce à ses racines souterraines et semences. Il est conseillé de confiner la croissance.
Ensemencement: La stratification des semences est nécessaire pendant 3 sem.. Semer les graines à l’intérieur pendant 6 à 8 sem. avant la transplantation. Les graines peuvent être semées directement à l’extérieur au début du printemps ou à la fin de l’automne.
Récolte: Elle est récoltée en pleine floraison ou lorsque les fleurs ont un peu séché sur la tige. Si vous écrasez les boutons floraux entre vos doigts et que vous voyez une substance rouge (c’est l’hypéricine, le principal composant médicinal), c’est que la plante est prête à être récoltée. Pour la récolte, coupez les deux ou trois premiers centimètres de la plante pour obtenir des feuilles, des fleurs et des bourgeons, car ils ont tous des effets bénéfiques.
