Native to Southern Europe and Asia. An ancient and excellent source of red dye. Square stems, whorled leaves, and pencil-slender roots that go down 2’. Do not harvest them for three years. Then dig deep to get the taproots, not the runner roots, and grind them to yield a wash- and light-fast red dye par excellence. Also called Dyer’s Madder. Perennial to Zone 5.
Planting tip: Sow indoors 4 weeks last frost and transplant after danger of frost has been passed. Keep runners trimmed to not let it spread. Seed can take two weeks to germinate.

Originaire d’Europe du Sud et d’Asie. Une ancienne et excellente source de teinture rouge. Tiges carrées, feuilles verticales et racines fines qui poussent jusqu’à 2 pieds de profond. Ne pas récolter avant trois ans. Ensuite, creuser profondément pour obtenir les racines pivotantes, pas les racines stolons, et les broyer pour obtenir une superbe teinture rouge lavable et résistante à la lumière. Vivace jusqu’à la zone 5.
Ensemencement: Semer à l’intérieur 4 sem. avant le dernier gel et transplanter après que le danger de gel soit passé. Garder les stolons taillés pour ne pas les laisser se propager. Les graines peuvent prendre deux sem. pour germer.
