”This European Continental Heirloom variety arrived in North America in 1799. It is a butterhead-type lettuce with appealing maroon-speckled green leaves. At maturity, a loosely packed 6-7″ head will produce juicy, tasty leaves. This variety has been listed on the SlowFood USA Ark of Taste. It is slow to bolt and also does well in cooler temperatures. ID: 52905 | Planting Tip: Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked. Can also start indoors 3-4 weeks ahead of planting. Most won’t germinate well above 25°C except a few heat-tolerant varieties. Harvesting Tip: Harvest anytime but flavor is best in fall after a few cold nights. Storage Tip: Can be stored in sand in root cellar at ~1-2°C. |
