These berries are a show-stopper for this plant. Originating in the wet mountain valleys of North America. It has a rich history in indigenous culture for making ink and is widely enjoyed in Europe dating back to the 1600s. The berries are mild flavour when unripe, wait until the colour turns crimson for juicy and sweet flavour to be cherished. Leave are that of spinach flavour, but high in oxalate for people sensitive to it. Consume in moderation. Close cousin of lambsquarter. ID: 47866 | Planting Tip: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring after the last frost or start indoors 4-6 weeks before. This plant prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Harvesting Tip: Harvest outer leaves when they reach full size by cutting at the base. Can also cut the whole plant 2-3 cm above the crown for regrowth. Harvest in the morning for best crispness. Storage Tip: Refrigerate unwashed leaves in a loosely sealed bag for up to 1 week. Wash only before use as moisture accelerates decay. |
